The nutty flavor of nutmeg enhances fall dishes...
When we think of the flavors of fall there are many treats that come to mind: pumpkin pie, apple pie, spiced apple cider, freshly baked spice cakes or breads, and squash soup among others. What do all these have in common? Their flavors are enhanced with the spice nutmeg.
Nutmeg has historically been used in Chinese and Indian medicine.
It's medicinal benefits are said to include stimulation of the cardiovascular system, promotion of concentration, and reduction of joint swelling. While these are some terrific benefits, we just simply love the flavor it adds to our fall menu! Although it was once very hard to come by because it was only produced on Dutch-controlled islands, today nutmeg is produced in the tropical areas of the West Indies, Brazil, Columbia, and Central America and is widely available throughout the world.
Though small in amount, nutmeg is an integral part of the flavor of our Perfect Apple Pie. You can't have Butternut Squash Soup without it. A versatile flavoring, it can be added to many soups, salads, meats, spiced breads or cakes, potatoes and other vegetables. Freshly grated nutmeg has a wonderful flavor that stands apart from the packaged variety. This freshly grated variety is terrific as a topper for soups, mulled apple cider, cappucino, and it's a special favorite for eggnog. Try some and see why this spice is all about fall!
