Charm & Grace Blog

Bliss Guild Blog’s Featured Member

April 19th, 2008 by Charm & Grace

I am a member of a wonderful online community called The Bliss Guild, which is a The Business of Blissgroup of women who are pursuing their dreams (bliss) through their own businesses.  This group originally formed in response to Victoria magazine’s The Business of Bliss, a book highlighting women who had taken their passions and turned them into profitable businesses.  I joined this group in January of 2007, just after I determined to learn web design and start my own online web magazine called Charm & Grace.   Since then I have been pursuing my dreams of doing artwork through web design and, as I have shared with you here, more recently through fine artwork.  It is such a blessing to be a part of this wonderful and talented group of women.  I have learned so much from so many who are part of the Bliss Guild community, and I am excited to tell you that right now on the Bliss Guild Blog I am the featured member. So, be sure to stop by and read my interview to learn all about my “bliss.”

Spring has come to Charm & Grace… and an Archive Meme

March 12th, 2008 by Charm & Grace

Pink DogwoodWell, the spring articles for Charm & Grace are officially out and ready for your perusal.  I must say that this issue is the best yet, and I do hope you agree.  There is much beauty awaiting as we travel through gardens of England, the Cotswolds, and visit the home of C.S. Lewis.  There are lovely photographs from Paul Noah (you’re getting a sneak peek with the pink dogwood blossoms at left) in our Spring Fling article on organization.  Our recipes this season, with a nod to St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, are all about eating those “greens.”  And be sure to look at our Featured Finds to see my new “artwork only” website.  I’d love to know what you think!  All in all, this issue is sure to fill you with thoughts of spring and all its wonders.  Come on over to Charm & Grace, and make yourself at home.

As for the archive meme, Bebe from the beautiful and inspiring Peaches and Dreams has tagged me with this interesting challenge.  So here goes:

Here are the instructions:

Link 1 must be about family.
Link 2 must be about friends.
Link 3 must be about yourself, who you are… what you’re all about.
Link 4 must be about something you love.
Link 5 can be anything you choose.

I think this is a great way to circulate some of the great older posts everyone has written, return to a few great places in our memories and also learn a little something about ourselves and each other that we may not know.

Post your five links and then tag five other people. At least TWO of the people you tag must be newer acquaintances so that you get to know each other better….and don’t forget to read the archive posts and leave comments!

1. Family:  We, as a family, have so much fun traveling together… we really love to go to historical places like battlefields and museums and find ourselves making excuses to go new places just so that we can do that.  But, the one place we are absolutely NUTS over is Walt Disney World.  We have been every year for the past several years and these past couple of years have spent 10 days soaking in all the pixie dust we could handle.  When it comes to Disney, we just lose all sense of moderation.  We have found ourselves saying, “There’s no way we’ll go back to WDW this year,” and then around September we begin to eat our words.    There are a couple of blog posts that give a hint about that here.

2.  Friends:  I have some wonderful friends, and a lot of them I have made since I started this blogging thing.  I still feel very new at blogging, as I haven’t even been at it a year yet, but I really enjoy the relationships I have made through this crazy e-world.  And as it relates to friends, I have recently had the opportunity to draw houses for two very special friends, Valery and Lisa.  And that has been an unimaginable blessing!  I have shared those two sketches with you here.

3.  Myself:  This is the hard one, since I really can’t ever think of very much to say about myself (I wonder what that says about me…)  Anyway, since I just completed a meme challenge where I told seven random facts about myself… here… I’ll just let that do the talking.

4.  Something I love:  Well, I love all kinds of things… all the things that are charming and graceful (of course!)  And, I love so many people… my hubby, my children, my mom, dad, mom-in-love, dad-in-love, step-dad, extended family, …and my friends.  But most of all I love Jesus, and without Him I wouldn’t be where I am right now.  I wouldn’t have the family and extended family and wonderful friends… and I wouldn’t have even the “things” that I do.  I love Him for loving me first, even when I was unlovable, and for making it easy for me to know Him, even though it meant torture for Him.

5.  Anything:  This one is easy …for any of you who have been reading here long, you know that one of my favorite things is Victoria Magazine, published initially by Hearst Corp. from 1987 through 2003.  Having subscribed to the original from 1987 through 1999, I have kept every one of my original copies through six moves.  And, thanks to Ebay, I have even added to the collection some of those I was missing from the years after my subscription ended.  It really was and continues to be the inspiration behind the Charm & Grace web magazine.  Every month I looked forward to getting my issue because (largely thanks to Nancy Lindemeyer and some of the most excellent photographers in the world) I knew it would be filled with beauty throughout its pages, in both images and words.  And now, we are very fortunate that Hoffman Media has given us the gift of bringing Victoria back to us.

And now I must look around and see who I can find to tag.  How about….

Lorrie at Fabric, Paper, Thread (getting you back, girlfriend :) )

Rebekka at Maple Sugar (yummy deliciousness …yes, that is a word)

Clare at Vintage Home (because I am fascinated by all things English!)

Just so you know, girls, this is a no obligation tag.  Since I just did a meme and tagged others, I am going to leave it at three.  But if there are others out there who want to do the meme… please do and leave a comment here.  I promise I will come look and read!

Happy spring!!!

And the tagger is…

February 25th, 2008 by Charm & Grace

Lorrie at Fabric, Paper, Thread of Vancouver has tagged me to list seven random facts about myself.   (Thanks for thinking of me, Lorrie.)  Since I generally consider myself to be fairly uninteresting, this will be a tough one (don’t you all find it much easier to write about things other than yourself?)   The hardest thing about these challenges is finding someone you can then “tag”… but I am looking around… and it just might be you.

Here are the rules:

1. Once you are tagged, link back to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Post 7 weird or random facts about yourself on your blog.
4. Tag 7 people and link to them (I like Lorrie’s approach, which I will describe later.)
5. Comment on their blog to let know they have been tagged.

So… 7 weird or random facts about me…  here goes:

1.  When I was young I wanted to be a fashion designer, stay single, and never have children… (thanking God that those dreams did NOT come true, as I am now happily married with 3 beautiful children!)

2.  I once rode across a 4 lane highway in a golf cart… with my grandfather.

3.  I am so fair that the lightest makeup almost looks dark on my skin.

4.  As a young girl I had over 30 cats; I am now allergic to cats.

5.  I have coordinated several ladies retreats which took place in the Smoky Mountains.

Beautiful Borghese6.  I have a bottle of perfume on my dresser, Princess Marcella Borghese’s Giardini di Montecatini XII, which lists on Overstock.com for $499.99.  Not being a huge perfume person, because I tend to get migraines from some scents, I probably have a grand total of 5 bottles of perfume in all. I first saw this brand in the original Victoria Magazine and once I had tried it, just had to have some.  (No, my hubby did not pay that much for it when he bought it for me years ago.  This price is very puzzling to me…)  Incidentally, the fragrance I wear most often is Burberry Brit.

7.  I have been doing hand calligraphy for 22 years, now.

So, I’d say those are pretty random facts.  As for the lucky ones to be tagged next, you are listed below.  (I tried to look back a bit and make sure you hadn’t been tagged for this one recently …and just so there’s no pressure, this is a no obligation tag!) :)

Lidy from French Garden House

Ruth from Artful Creations

Mimi from French Kitchen in America

Jo from NeereAnDear Blog

Bebe from Peaches-And-Dreams

And (taking a cue from Lorrie) if there are others of you who would like to participate, please leave a comment and then follow the rules listed above.

Hugs and blessings,

Christi

Victoria sends a lovely early birthday present…

February 22nd, 2008 by Charm & Grace

March/April Victoria

I received the loveliest surprise in my mailbox today, the March/April issue of Victoria magazine… which I am sure they intended as an early birthday present (as mine falls a week from tomorrow.)  The third offering of Victoria by Hoffman, this one is resplendent with beauty… definitely their best effort.

Victoria's Rose

With gorgeous images of gardens, flowers, a Scottish-style manor house in British Columbia, fashion, and more, this issue delights the eye from cover to cover.  I am all the more encouraged that the magazine will again be what she once was… the rightful Queen of Magazines.

Victoria Tea

My heart is full to see this magazine come in all its glorious springtime splendor. My spirits are buoyed by what I have seen from this issue and my hopes even higher for the ones to follow.  Thank you, Victoria, for your early birthday present to me and for ushering in our vernal equinox in the proper fashion.

Our beautiful Victoria magazine has returned…

October 12th, 2007 by Charm & Grace

Today is a very special day for women with a fondness for charm and grace…  our beloved Victoria magazine has returned to us.  The first “rebirthed” issue is being mailed out even as I write, and we are all waiting eagerly to see what is inside.  How appropriate that the first issue is a holiday issue and that the cover reads in large letters, “REJOICE!”  And, indeed we are rejoicing!  What was a brilliantly written, photographed, and laid out magazine published by Hearst from 1987 through 2003, is being brought to us again by a new publisher, Hoffman Media.  With several magazines targeted to women of varied interests, from culinary to sewing to tea, Hoffman stands ready to fill this long-lamented void for Victoria lovers everywhere.  And we are anxiously awaiting their offering.

Christmas Victorias

Victoria has always been, for me, much more than a magazine.  It is more like a comprehensive visual encyclopedia of charm, beauty, grace, and knowledge.  From stories on famous authors, to historical figures, to successful entrepreneurs of our day, Victoria challenged our intellect, fulfilled our longing for beauty in a magazine, and even fostered our creativity.  I, like so many others, have kept all my Victorias through six moves.  I couldn’t have thrown them away any more than I would throw away a beautiful painting or an antique piece of furniture.  I once even had to rescue them from a damp basement, and they survived beautifully.  (They now reside in my bedroom so that they are protected and so that I can pull one off the shelf at a moment’s notice.)

Christmas Victorias

I would like to go and stand by my mailbox until the beautiful magazine arrives, but my neighbors might begin to wonder about me.  So, I will wait patiently (well, maybe not patiently) inside until she arrives.  In the meantime, I think I will put the kettle on for tea…

Rebirth of a treasured friend, VICTORIA

April 27th, 2007 by Charm & Grace

This is one journal entry that my fingers couldn’t wait to type: Victoria Magazine will be relaunched as a bi-monthly magazine this fall beginning with the November/December issue set to be released in October. Hearst Publications has partnered with Hoffman Media, a Birmingham, Alabama-based publisher of women’s specialty magazines, to bring back this treasured magazine.

Victoria MagazineVictoria was such a beloved magazine that many of its readers are awaiting the opportunity to subscribe. One group of faithful Victoria followers can be found at Return To Loveliness, a yahoo group set up specifically for discussing all things Victoria.

Hoffman Media publishes several women’s titles and Victoria will be a fitting addition to their group. Phyllis Hoffman, the founder of the publishing company, plans to re-establish Victoria as “the official guide to gracious living.” According to the press release from April 25th, Hoffman said, “Women across the country have longed to have their beloved Victoria back and now they will.” She said, “Victoria is a perfect fit for our roster of lifestyle titles that share a similar editorial and demographic focus. We’re thrilled to be working with Hearst to revive this brand for a more targeted audience of women.”

What a wonderful thought that this lovely old friend will be new again…
